Knitting with Cotton - Myths Debunked
Why choose cotton yarn?
Cotton is soft and hypoallergenic, so it feels really good on your skin.
I absolutely love cotton. Why is cotton so often underestimated? It is actually a beautiful material: soft, resilient, hypoallergenic, sustainable, and renewable. At fiber festivals I often hear “working with cotton hurts my hands.” Yes, the so-called “kitchen cotton” hurts my hands, too. This commercially produced cotton, sold in large-box stores under brands like Sugar’n Cream, has its purpose for wash clothes and kitchen towels, but it is not pleasant to work with.
The cotton that I use at Wolle’s is a completely different “animal.”
I live in Virginia where we have cold winters and hot, humid summers and I wear shawls made with my cotton yarn all year round: in the winter for warmth and in the summer to fend off any draft from air conditioning
My cotton is hypoallergenic, so it is suitable for everybody, including people who are allergic to wool or who have extra sensitive skin.
Most of our yarns are fingering weight, the same weight as sock yarn, but we also have sport weight and DK weight yarns. Our fingering weight is the most popular and uses needle sizes 3 – 7 (US) or 3 – 4.5 mm. Using this comparatively thin yarn is ideal because the finished projects are so wearable. In our Ravelry group “Fans of Wolle’s Yarn Creations” we have extensive pattern recommendations for scarves, shawls, cowls, hats, tops, and cardigans. I hope you will give our cotton a try; I am willing to bet that you will be surprised how soft our yarn is and how wonderful it is to knit with our cotton.
